One of the most popular questions we hear from readers of Video Watchdog is, "Where can I find... ?" referring to a film, book or CD reviewed within the pages.

In the early days of mail order, before the internet (remember when?), we had a Sources column that attempted to give the snail-mail order addresses of most of the companies with products featured in each issue. Then when the internet became popular, we tried to include the www addresses as well. But even then, readers were forced to bring the magazine to the computer and type in sometimes very unwieldy internet addresses.

Links highlighted in issue 182

Now, we've made it easy. Just click on the highlighted film title on the page, and you are taken to a website where the title is available. On iOS devices the links are invisible, but they are there! I kind of like the clean invisible links. More surprising!

We hope you will like this feature. If you do, we'll update all of them! We are just testing it out first with the Keeper version and app versions of issue 182. Not everything has a link, but most titles do.

If you already own issue 182, updates are free. On tablets you may see a push notification letting you know there is an update. Download it now or later if you like. If you don't own issue 182 yet, head over to the Keepers area on the website and Unlock it now, or get it free on your mobile device. It's going to disappear soon!

You can find all of the Digital Editions in the Library. We will have an update trail for each edition that is updated in that area eventually. For now, please subscribe to this blog so you will know when something changes.

Any thoughts? Is it easy to use? Leave a comment and let me know. We'll do more!

Tim invited me to join him in his Barks video for this edition. It's my Digital Edition debut! Haha!

I'm not telling what it's about, but we filmed this in my office on my iPad Mini just a few minutes before leaving to go out to dinner with friends. One take. One BIG story! Digital is wonderful! This is the perfect place to tell you about it.

Just click on the cover above to get started. Get the Keeper version if you want to save it to your computer.

Also in this issue, I've embedded an entire movie!

Each of these issues have some Digital Exclusives -- an extra book review in issue 177, and 10 additional pages of Shane Rimmer's interview by Mark F. Berry in issue 178 -- plus trailers and videos of course!

This brings us up-to-date with all the digital editions of Video Watchdog. It took a while, but I think we have the hang of it now.

A Reminder

Issues 175 - 179 will be free until issue 180 is released. Remember, if you unlock them while they are free with your email/password combo, they will be yours even when the price changes to $3.99.

Normally only the latest issue of Video Watchdog will be free digitally, and then when a new issue is published, the free issue moves to back issue status and becomes $3.99. Be sure to check in periodically and catch the latest issue while it's in Free status so you can keep a digital "subscription" going in the future.

A new Password Reset program is now available for you to use if you are having trouble remembering your Digital Editions password. Here's the link. It's also on the Support Tab.

I've been working working working to try to make the login experience easier for you and I hope this helps.

When I first assigned login IDs to all of the supporters of our Indiegogo project, we didn't have the proper login procedures in place. (I was too excited to share I guess!) So some of you may have 2 login IDs: one for your Indiegogo Perks, and one from creating a new ID to get issue 175 or 176 or anything else you may have ordered from the website.

<<sigh>>

I am in the process of combining the IDs into one for most cases and the Password Reset link might be helpful. Please contact me if you need any help whatsoever, OK?

Drumroll...

Video Watchdog 176 is now available digitally on all platforms!

The issue has been finished for a while, but the website and apps both needed revamping in order to bring this issue out. It's been a struggle to say the least, but I hope the results are going to work on all devices as planned.

This digital edition, like all new ones, has been released with and without DRM (Digital Rights Management). The issue without DRM will eventually disappear from the website. It's there to allow quick and easy access for casual readers; those who are curious about the content and just want to see how it works.

The "Keepers" are exactly the same content-wise but a login ID is required. It also allows saving to your computer or laptop.

If you have a tablet or phone, the Video Watchdog App can be downloaded from the App store on your device, and you'll see the issue inside the App. Tap to download. On Android and Kindle we've introduced a sign-in procedure so that you can get the issue free forever on all devices. Just tap and it will show you how to unlock it.

If anyone experiences trouble logging in, please let me know. We are in the midst of having a password-changing program written which will help with forgotten passwords, but for now, I'm your go-to person. :-) Just contact me with link to the right.

More soon! Once I make sure this one goes smoothly, I'll be releasing more. They'll all be free for a while, so get them now while unlocking is free.

Please let me know of any improvements I can make by leaving a comment below, OK?

Our contest is still on for winning a copy of issue #1. You have a few more days to enter!

Enjoy this one. I'll make more.

On this day, 25 years ago, Video Watchdog was born!

Video Watchdog #1 came back from the printer after weeks of anticipation. We only received a rush order of about 50 copies, but it was thrilling! We became publishers! We had the bug. Our incredible 25-year publishing journey began that day.

There is nothing more satisfying to a writer than seeing one's work in print. Holding the issue, feeling the paper, smelling the ink. I love that Tim has an outlet for his writing, a voice in the world, and I can help play a part in that. It's a dream come true.

Eventually we had to get down off our cloud and face reality. We had over 300 subscribers and a long list of bookstores waiting for copies. Our printer sent out the bookstore copies and delivered the rest to us. 1800 issues out of a print run of 5,000 were in our foyer, all on the wrong paper, some with strange cuts, weird folds. Delivered late. I recorded more details here in my diary, but I think you get the picture. Depression set in. Still, it was our first issue and we were proud of it, even though we had a lot to learn.

Now, 25 years later, here we are in print and digital formats, and it's exciting all over again! We want to celebrate with you, so here's what's up.
Good morning!

Can I just tell you how awesome the Digital Archive is?

I just started reading Issue 7. Coppola's TITIAN? Never heard of it. 3 versions of TERROR CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE? I had no idea.

I am SO glad I pledged for the complete archive during Your Kickstarter campaign. Thank you for this magnum opus. I'll be reading for years :)

Well... hello!!

It's been great bringing you FREE digital editions this month!

The final two we've chosen for previewing are very special indeed. These are the Signature Editions we published that were autographed by Donnie Dunagan (SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, voice of BAMBI), and Ann Carter (THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE). We still have some of the autographed print copies available too.

Tom Weaver interviewed them both exclusively for Video Watchdog and helped introduce Donnie Dunagan into the fan-based community after years of obscurity. We met him and his lovely wife Dana on several occasions and consider them very dear friends. Donnie supplied us with a wealth of photos and scrapbook pages that we will be integrating into this digital edition as it continues to evolve.

Ann Carter Newton passed away in January this year. She was one of the sweetest women I have ever had the pleasure of speaking to. She also sent us a wealth of photos and stills to publish that we will add in as the archive grows. Weaver's interview in this issue tells of her film career and her struggles with polio at an early age and cancer later in life. A very brave, strong woman, and a sweet soul--we miss her dearly.

We hope you've enjoyed these free peeks this month. We can't wait till they are released in mid-December to the world!

David Lynch, Mario Bava, Barbara Steele

What a triple-header!

3 of our Favorites!

We love the cover stories, but... here's the real reason we've chosen to preview these three issues. They contain parts 1-3 of "The Trouble with Titian," where "Tim Lucas recovers Francis Ford Coppola's lost thriller OPERATION: TITIAN and begins the never-before-told story of how Roger Corman turned it into 5 movies! Includes an exclusive interview with William Campbell!”

You can read all 3 parts now. (Issue 7 has been sold out for years!)

Issue 4 sold out early on, too--since it was a David Lynch issue in the TWIN PEAKS days. We reprinted it with black and white covers so collectors could tell the difference between the original (a blue tint on the front and back) and the reprint. We sacrificed an original copy to the paper cutter so we could bring the digital version to you unaltered.

Issue 5 was our first big Bava issue, and if any of you have Mario Bava--All the Colors of the Dark you may recognize some of the photos that originated here. Might be fun to compare this to the book and see what changed. :-)

Issue 7 is devoted to Barbara Steele, the iconic star of BLACK SUNDAY. This issue sold out years ago and was never reprinted. Unless you were able to get an original copy, you've been unable to finish reading the 3rd part of the Titian article. So here you go!

In other news... not to bury the headline

The Digital Archive is complete!

Yes, we've digitized all 174 back issues and the 2 Special Editions, and they will be published and on sale in December for $549. Individual issues will be $3.99.

It's on sale for a few more days at a discounted price now through the end of November as a pre-order.

We are so excited to see this project about to go live! Hope you are enjoying the previews of what's to come too!

We hope you enjoy these 3 treats for the weekend!

These are the last 3 issues with major features by our friend Michael Lennick. The Harryhausen piece was written by our own Charlie Largent, who also designed the cover image for this issue.

If you see anything we can improve, please let us know by leaving a comment below.

For those of you on tablets and phones, these issues should appear and disappear automatically from your devices. There's been a bit of a 'bug' when an issue disappears, saying you need to resubscribe to see it again. But that's just a generic message we can't get around undoing. Please ignore it!

More to come in the final weeks ahead as we zero in on December and get to actually release these to the world!

Still in the Days of Cut and Paste - Literally!

This issue on The STAR WARS Trilogy and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION was Michael Lennick's first big feature for us, and the subject was right up his alley. (His website he later created was foolishearthlings.com.) He loved everything about Space, so we gave him all the space he needed for this issue.

We rarely put STAR WARS on the cover of Video Watchdog. We were getting bored with all the coverage that film got on the covers of Cinefantastique and other magazines. It seemed they put something Star Wars-like on every cover in the '90s just to sell issues. We were rebels. But we made an exception for Mikey.

None of the illustrations for this issue were taken with digital equipment. This was in the days of cut and paste. Most were stills and photos from our collection or borrowed from others. I would lay out the text on the computer and leave a blank area for the illustration to be pasted in later.

It was difficult to take an 8 x 10 still and figure out how it would fit into a 5 inch space. I used a proportional scale to figure that out.

Then we'd pack up the stills and take them to our printer to have PMTs (photo mechanical transfers) made. We'd tell them to shoot at certain sizes like 56%. The pictures would come back on a thick photo paper with a dot pattern that could then be shot to negatives for the press. If you see a dot pattern in some of these illustrations, that's why it's there.

It was very difficult to do text on top of a picture, or fill in a blank background with a light screen of gray, but working with the folks at Crest Graphics, we were able to pull it together for the opening image for page 36. I was very proud of the result.

Michael Lennick

1952 - 2014

On November 7 our dear friend and VW contributor, Michael Lennick, passed away suddenly from aggressive brain cancer.

We met on the set of David Cronenberg's Videodrome in 1981 where Tim had been sent by Cinefantastique to write a feature about the film, and I tagged along to take pictures. Michael was on the crew shooting video playbacks. He and Tim bonded like brothers.

Michael had a keen interest in all things Science Fiction, and took a particular interest in the space program. He contributed to several of our issues, including issue #1's "Lasers on Stun" article. He was looking forward to the digital editions appearing, and filmed this testimonial for us for our Kickstarter/Indiegogo project.

We last spoke this summer when he called to ask advice about crowd-funding for his planned documentary "The Children of Pearl Harbor." The project successfully launched but had to be pulled when he went into the hospital a few weeks ago.

Michael was a talented and kind soul, with a quiet nature and more ideas than he knew what to do with. We miss him dearly. Tim wrote a wonderful tribute to him on Video WatchBlog.

I would also like to honor his memory by sharing some of his articles he wrote for Video Watchdog here with you over the next several days.

Although Michael loved print and had every issue of the magazine, he thought the digital editions were going to be really exciting. He was really looking forward to seeing his work in this new format and sharing it with the world.

Enjoy.

May the force be with you, Mikey.

The Secret

Our 100th issue was a special occasion, and we wanted to do something really amazing. We asked our Kennel members to contribute 10 short reviews so we could have 100 reviews for our 100th. We asked Charlie Largent to give our cover a new look. And then we kept the most surprising thing a secret: Color!

It was always tantalizing for me to see the images in color as I placed them on the page, and it was always disappointing for me to see them turn into black and white on paper. It was time to publish in color. Only Tim, John Charles (VW's Associate Editor), our printer and myself knew of this plan. We wanted it to be a big surprise.

Believe me, it was a struggle with old CRT monitors in RGB colors to match the CMYK colors on the press. And we had one company print the negatives while our printer did the printing. Having color profiles bounce between my computer, Harlan Type and Crest-Graphics took some adjustment.

OMG... I was in LOVE!

Finally it was done. We crossed our fingers. We couldn't wait to see the proofs. We went over to Harlan Type and saw the pages rolling off a wide printer on large sheets of shiny paper. I fell in love! I couldn't stop staring at each page. It was so magical!

Finally, Publication Day Came

Gary Hill, our rep from Crest-Graphics, presented us with the first issues in person.

Video Watchdog #2 - Free Look!

Login: digitaldog
Password: treats
Available thru Sunday, November 9

Our Testing Team has been putting the Digital Editions through very detailed and heavy-duty testing for almost a week now, and I am extremely pleased with the feedback and suggestions for improvements they have come up with for this Archive! We can't wait to see what you think too!

Your Turn!

Throughout this month I'll be posting different editions for you to try out. VW #2 is one of my favorites. As a designer, it is dear to my heart. It was the first time I got the printer to superimpose the text "Blood & Donuts" over a picture (way back in the paste-up days), it was printed on real paper (not cover stock like the first one), and I got some very good magazine design advice from my mentor and logo designer, Radomir Perica. We reprinted this one from the original plates, but with black and white covers. So if you have one with a purple tint on the cover, you have the first printing.

This is a David Lynch issue, and he is bringing back TWIN PEAKS, so let's celebrate by looking back at the series, way back in Fall of 1990.

PCs - Click, Login and Have Fun!

If you're on a computer, just click on the cover above, login with 'digitaldog' and the password 'treats'. We'll keep the login name and password the same throughout this month, but this issue will only be available through Sunday, November 9. Check back here for another issue.

For Tablet or Phone Users

To see this on your device, download the Video Watchdog app from the various app stores, and once you are in, tap on Editions at the bottom of the screen and log in with 'digitaldog' and 'treats' for the password. The issues will show up on your device all month, but they'll also disappear when the time period expires.

If you already have the Video Watchdog app and have logged in with a different username/password combo from our website, your previous purchases may disappear for a short while when logged in with this username and password, but you'll get them back again when you re-enter your usual credentials. Don't worry!

For more information about getting the apps, check out the instructions above in the FAQ area.

Please Leave a Comment

Help us to test! If you find any problem with the issue, we want to know. Of course, we'd also love to hear how you like it! Let us know in a comment below.

I hope you'll pass the word along and tell a friend to stop by. Free treats all month!

Have a great weekend! More fun is coming!

Today begins the launch of a 30-day testing period for the Digital Archive!

The interest level for this project was amazing! A big Thank You to all who applied to be Testers. We received an overwhelming response and narrowed the field to 34 who use a wide range of test devices.

144 issues are ready and being tested right now. The remaining issues will join the testing phase over the next couple of weeks. I'm so proud of our digital specialists team who exceeded the 105 issue goal I initially thought we could achieve! And in the next few weeks I'll be spotlighting them here on the blog, and outlining some of the procedures we went through to bring these to you.

Also throughout November we'll be posting an issue here and there so you can see for yourself how it looks and works on your device--free for a day or two only. So watch this blog, or subscribe to it on the right if you want to be notified of anything new by email right away.

And if you like what you see, the Digital Archive is on sale now for preorder at a significant savings through November. Maybe it's time to ask Santa for a new phone or tablet...

As the Digital Edition project nears completion, we want to make sure it passes inspection before we go live. Do you want to be one of the first to see each Digital Edition of Video Watchdog and offer feedback before it is released in December?

There is work involved, but this just might be an opportunity you don't want to pass up!

It Could Be You!

We need some serious testers who are willing to go through a checklist of tasks on each edition to make sure the videos play, the Table of Contents is correct, the pages look good, links work, and a host of other things on the following devices:

Computers
Laptops
Notebooks
Tablets
Phones

OS includes: Apple, Android, Linux, Windows, Kindle Fire

What's Involved?

Testers who are chosen will have access to all 176 editions for 30 days through a private blog with links to the editions, and on tablets and phones with a special subscription login.

The test period is November 1-30, which means an average of 6 issues need to be tested daily. Phone and Tablet testing requires downloading the edition (10mb - 60mb) with or without video content (it can be streamed to save space), and can be deleted once it is tested. Computer testing involves no downloads, but Flash is needed on your PC.

Testers follow a checklist for guidance. Changes that are found need to be logged in as a comment on the private testing blog.

A partial checklist

All testers must have their own device (computer, phone, tablet) and be able to access the blog from a computer or other device that will let them add comments to the blog page. Testers need to be available for the whole month of November because some titles will appear mid-November.

What's the Reward?

If you are selected and complete the testing program, you get the complete Digital Archive playable on all devices!

83% Complete!

Out of 1,256 procedures that needed to be done to prep this 176-issue archive, we have only 208 more to go! That's 83% for the bean counters out there. I'm feeling good!

84 - Completed
50 - with 3 more procedures
16 - with 2 more procedures
26 - with 1 more procedure!

Although countdowns are exciting, I will be overjoyed to see these issues go live.

And as awesome as the Digital Editions are going to be, there is another technology that we are in love with. It's is absolutely Amazing. Perhaps you've seen it?

Absolutely Nuthin'!

Last month Tim's ancient, hobbling, Windows XP computer bit the dust. We were hoping to make it through another issue of Video Watchdog, but no...

I was able to resuscitate it with an old power supply long enough to transfer his programs to a new iMac.

We are so thankful nothing was lost except a lot of our time and worry during the transfer. What you see above is Windows XP running on an iMac.

What ? ? ?

Yes, it can be done. Using Parallels software. But why do it?

Because we can!

We have been DOS users, then Windows users since 1985. We still use old DOS programs (WordPerfect for DOS, dBase III Plus), and a few Windows programs we can't find Mac replacements for (ePrompter, Desktop Calendar). But mostly, we didn't want to lose even more time learning a completely different operating system and keyboard in the middle of our digital projects.

The Digital Archive Indiegogo campaign contributions made this all possible. Thanks to all of you for the rescue!

The iMac is a super piece of equipment, and Windows runs better on the iMac than it does on a Windows computer. With the swipe of a magic mouse, or a trackpad, the screen changes to the Mac. And now we can be more knowledgeable about the Mac side with Digital Edition customer support.

Best of both worlds.

I am happy, but Tim is still struggling with the Mac keyboard using Windows programs. We'll figure it out eventually. We're both on Macs now, running Windows. It's transition time.

If any of you have been in the same situation, we'd love to hear how you got through it.

More news coming up. Stay tuned!

Buried in work, tied to our computers for months, we are beginning to see the light!

We have been working intensely on the Digital Archive over the past few months, and I am excited to say that we are on target for publishing in December!

There was a learning curve with the process and new equipment, but we've overcome the biggest hurdles. Developing these editions is truly an art form in itself.

Here's where we are now for all 176 issues:

Scanning - All done!
Clean-up - only 5 more issues to go
OCR work - 87 to be made searchable
Multimedia - 142 waiting for enhancements
Finished - 34 ready for testing

I know we are behind with the current digital editions and I apologize for being so late. I intend to rectify that situation as soon as possible.

Our original plans morphed into several revised workflows due to some unforeseen events. Like my computer nearly dying (!) so switching over from a PC to a Mac had to be implemented right in the middle of the project. And the scanning software didn't perform OCR as well as I wanted, so scanning and OCR had to be done in two different steps by two different people. Cleanup was done by another crew, and the addition of links and multimedia by yet another crew.

But you know what? It's working like a well-oiled machine now. Editions in various stages are completed each day, and it's so rewarding to see the final editions come to life. Years of work, literally at my fingertips now.
I can't wait to see it in your hands, on your computers, your tablets and phones.

YES!

Last weekend the Video Watchdog app appeared in the Kindle App Store. Issue 175 and the Bava Book Sample are both available Free. You can purchase the entire digital Bava book for $29.99 and read/play it on your Kindle Fire.

Please help test it!

We've been testing the app on Kindle Fire 1st and 2nd generation devices, and we've experienced a few minor problems. We are addressing them and an update will be available when everything is fixed, but we would appreciate any feedback from you and your experience so we can make sure the app is functioning over all the Kindle Fire devices.

Fixes underway:

Video: Click 3 times to play a video (instead of once): 1-click the Play icon, 2-click the black video box to display the Play control, 3-click Play.

Rotation stuck: Once a video enlarges to full screen, the device rotates to landscape and will not go back to portrait until you reboot your Kindle. Grrrr....

Forgets where you were: When you leave a page and go back to another program, the app doesn't remember where you were and starts back at the beginning. You can place a bookmark on your page to go back to it quickly in the interim.

We realize this can be frustrating, and we are working to solve these issues as soon as we can.

Get it now while 175 is free!

But we wanted to announce this so you can still get the FREE issue while it is still free! Issue 176 will be up shortly, and then issue 175 will cost $3.99, so please get it free now, and let us know how it plays on your device by adding a comment below.

Since some Kindle Fires have a small amount of storage space, the embedded videos are streamed instead of downloaded. You can choose to download the videos individually by clicking on the video icon (looks like a floppy disk) when a video plays. Everything else is stored on the Kindle (pictures, sounds). Delete it anytime, and retrieve it from the cloud anytime. It's yours once you've 'purchased' it for free.

Please remember this app is for Kindle Fire devices only. It will not work on Kindle eReaders or Paperwhites because of the interactive content available. (At least, that's what we're told. I'm curious to know if someone can download it onto an eReader, but just not have access to the interactive content?)

Thanks for testing for us, and please let us know how it works for you!
